I really had no expectations going into this book. I love the idea of a girl being perfectly happy being a geek (especially since I have geek tendencies and am fine with that), and that's what really made me pick up this book. I ended up loving it.

I thought the plot was well laid out. There is a mixture of story, plus periodic transcripts from an audio recording between Emily and a man named Mr. Savage. These transcripts give the tiniest hints that there is much more to this story that what we've been given so far. It increased my interest, and made me want to keep reading faster so I could find out what was going to happen. Inserts like these can sometimes decrease tension, but not in this case. Sampson did a great job with these transcripts.

The plot of the regular story was well laid out as well. There is a big reveal midway through the story, and I didn't see it coming. Though, as I thumbed back through the first half, the clues are there. So, I'm not sure if I was so engrossed in the story that I missed the clues, or if I was being a lazy reader, or what. But I was as surprised as Emily when she found out what was happening to her, which I loved.

The only thing I didn't like was Emily's best friend, Megan. She's not the greatest friend, and it bothered me that Emily is still friends with her even though Megan kind of treats her poorly. However, she is definitely worse to other people, so maybe Emily measures the difference that way. Not sure. I do wish that Megan had been a little more likable, at least when it came to Emily. I do wonder if there are things going on with Megan that we haven't seen yet, though...

The resolution was good, and I love that there wasn't a huge focus on the romance aspect. It was there, and it was well done, but it didn't overshadow the rest of the story. I also liked how the current story was resolved, at the same time introducing more questions that will likely be answered in the next book. I thought this was a good start to the series. Definitely recommended.

This book would be good for kids aged 14 or so and up. There aren't any racy scenes, but there are many references to Emily's body and the male reaction to it.

The blurb on this book made it seem really interesting and I was excited to read it, however, I was left feeling somewhat unsatisfied and disappointed.

The majority of this book moved very slowly and was quite boring for the most part. A lot of the book focusses on a girl who starts to act in ways completely opposite to what she normally does and she tries to figure out why her behaviour at night is so outrageous, and the plotline revolves around going to school, sneaking out to parties, etc. There is a murder mystery in the story but it seemed to take a back seat to what was going on with the main character.

The main protagonist is Emily, a 16 year old high school student, but she was portrayed a lot younger. Her best friend Meagan was inconsistent and the two of them didn’t actually come across as best friends. I felt that all the characters were one dimensional and unlikeable and it was hard to care much about any of them.

Most of the action in this story occurs in the last part of the book but it was somewhat confusing and I felt like I was missing something important.
I also don’t feel the author, Jeff Sampson, was successful in writing a story from a female’s point of view. It just didn’t seem believable that it was written from a girl’s perspective. It felt more like it was written how a male might think a teenage girl thinks and behaves, and I think he got it wrong on many fronts.

Overall, the concept of the story is great, but I just feel that it could have been so much more than it was. For me, it’s a paranormal read that was severely lacking and I won’t be continuing this series.
One of the most amazing books I have read! Can't wait for the next one! Jeff Sampson is a great writer.
Not worth finishing. Just wasn't for me.
About a year ago (February-ish, I think), the publisher (HarperCollins) put a teaser of Vesper by Jeff Sampson out online. I read the first 78 pages and really enjoyed them. But then life happened, and my TBR pile EXPLODED and Vesper got put on the back burner. Over Christmas, I noticed that the ebook version of Vesper was on sale on for 99cents (and still is), so I bought it.

Because I had already read the first part of the book and enjoyed it, I figured I was in for a treat. Overall, I felt a little let down.

I liked how Emily wasn't moody, that she was a self-proclaimed geek and proud of it. I liked that she didn't just fall for some guy. I liked how she really questioned what was happening to her. I was interested to see how an adult male would write a teenage girl, and that was ok, I felt that was right-on.

But then, I didn't like how the "logical" conclusion to Emily's condition was werewolf. I honestly didn't see that one coming, for me, the "diagnosis" kind of came out of thin air. It was "fast paced" in that it moved quick but didn't go into a lot of depth (or enough depth to satisfy me.)

All in all, I was just kind of meh about the book. I can see how some would LOVE it, but sadly enough, it just wasn't for me.
I want to begin with the fact that I'm a 26 year old, who enjoys reading young adult books, along with many other genres. I began reading this book, not knowing really what it was about. I had so much fun reading it! I loved the nerdy main character, with the MMORPG playing dad. The main character is a girl, who is tough but also is constantely worried about what others will think of her. She's very relateable.

This series has a ton of potential. The story was very well written and there wasn't a dull part in the book. I can't wait to read the next one. I also appreciate the author not leaving you COMPLETELY hanging at the end of the book. Thank you for that!
