Finally an historical time travel with factual historical details! Not that is has never happened before, but somehow, most authors conveniently forget that 13th century English would be totally unintelligible for a 20th century-born woman. I loved that there was an actual language barrier and that the heroine did not magically understand everything. Okay, it took her a week, but she also normally works as a French translator, so we can cut her a little slack... I absolutely fell in love with the hero, who, refreshingly, is not the richest and most powerful man in the land and is having some genuine issues having to do with his place in the world, etc. He's full of emotions and having him as alternate narrator and seeing how he loves her is just... *dreamy sighs inserted here*...
I wish there would have been more chapters in the end when he's in our time... (NO spoilers there, as anyone will figure this out in the first chapters.) This is a great love story! I loved the passion between the two, and how they come to care deeply for one another. The book takes course over a very short span of 3 weeks, and the heroine is somewhat ready to fall in love with the hero even before she disappears down the rabbit hole. And although I really despise and stay far away from Insta-Love romances, this one did not feel like insta-love (maybe a little insta-lust...), so don't hesitate here. Oh, it's not a complex story, and its doesn't have complicated plot twists or mysterious hidden villains... it's a good weekend book (don't start this on a work day, you won't get any sleep!). It's well written and neither the hero or the heroine get TSTL syndrome, and he made me sigh and made my toes curl, and sometimes that is just what you need, right?
P.S.: Dear author, can you make us a story where it's the Hero who is transposed in time, or where the heroine is transported to the future? We never see that, why? Would be interesting to see a 21st century man deal with 13th or 16th century demands and heroine... Well, you get my drift...

What can I say except that I love this book.

I fell in love with her first time travel romance, Must Love Breeches, but this book is even better. I've read 3 of Angela Quarles' books now, and there are some wonderfully consistent things about her writing and storytelling. She has an amazing voice -- you could read anything by her and *know* it was her. Her characters have a very satisfying story arc, and she has a way of writing an intimate scene that is fresh and new -- and steamy -- without it having to get to anything explicit! (Remember the wrist scene in MLB?) Both of her time travel romances made me want to start back at the beginning after I finished reading the story.

She also has a knack for writing details and explaining experiences that any displaced modern woman would feel/see/smell/taste. It's what makes you *experience* the book. Her historical details are well-researched and never boring. I totally recommend this book!

Must Love Chainmail has earned 1st place in the 2016 Rita Awards for the paranormal category. In case some readers do not know, the Rita is the contest run by Romance Writers of America and is the most prestigious contest a writer can win. I looked forward to reading it with great anticipation. I love time-travel romances and have read them for many years. The story started out well, and I enjoyed the hero and the heroine, but it slowed for me. I can't even put my finger on what exactly stopped working for me.

I do want to mention I listened to the audio version performed by Mary Jane Wells, and she does a credible job. She reads with just the right amount of emotion without taking it too far, and she gives each character a distinct voice. I would listen to her again.

Nonetheless, it does end up having a great ending, which did help redeem this book for me. On further contemplation as I write this review, I'm thinking what kept taking me out of the story was the modern feel to the writing. I absolutely love historical romances, and what I like most about them is being swept back to a different time. I was constantly reminded of the present, and not because the heroine came from the present and traveled back in time.

Perhaps this will not bother other readers, and the author does include a note letting the reader know she has written Must Love Chainmail in this manner. Obviously, this aspect of the book did not bother the Rita judges, or the majority of readers as it did me. Happy reading!
