No More Lonely Nights takes the reader to the era of the popular television series Mad Men.
Heroine Dominique Avallon has been raised in the opulent French expatriate community of WWII Egypt. But revolution and a doomed love affair with a British officer drive her into an arranged marriage with an older man who promises her a new life in America. Chafing under the stern gaze of her aristocratic mother, she is ready to escape the danger and heartbreak of Egypt.
When Dominique discovers her husband is a fraud, she flees their home in San Francisco for New York. For the first time, she is alone and impoverished. Desperate, she puts her glamorous experience to use, and triumphs as the mastermind behind sparkling galas for the city's most stylish department store.
Her good luck seems confirmed when a devilishly handsome New Orleans shipping heir sweeps her off her feet into marriage. But when her fairy tale becomes tarnished, her self-reliance is tested again, only now she has her mother and her daughter depending on her.
The homemakers of the 1950s and '60s have become the career women of the '70s and '80s. Facing hard times once more, Dominique must hurry to catch up, fighting for her true identity and career. Yet even as her struggling career starts to succeed, Dominique is faced with her most difficult choice yet. Will she risk her hard-won independence for the possibility of another chance at love?
No More Lonely Nights is inspired by the true story of the author's mother and grandmother, and their tales of the glamour they once knew.
No More Lonely Nights eBook Nicole McGehee
"No More Lonely Nights" is not my genre of choice, but the book came highly recommended. I stuck a careful toe in - courtesy of Amazon's "Look Inside" - and found myself teleported to the teak rail of a departing steamer in Alexandria Harbor, circa 1956, with full sensory input and exotic panorama. I was seeing everything through the eyes of an irresistible ingénue, Dominique Avallon, just embarking on the adventure of her life. No way I was jumping ship till the voyage was over!Let me say it straight out: Nicole McGehee is an enchantress of a storyteller. She writes in cinematic scenes, each infused with powerful and persuasive emotion, ranging from romantic ecstasy to a depth of heartbreak at times almost unbearable to read. Scenes are rendered with a descriptive skill that dissolves words and phrases into immediate sensation and emotion. With Dominique, we move through the elegantly observed homes and offices and playgrounds of the rich and powerful in a series of great cities--Cairo, San Francisco, Manhattan, New Orleans and Washington. But the power of the story is in the vivid characters, and none more vivid than Dominique, whose fighting spirit in every crisis of her turbulent life reminds one of Scarlett O'Hara. (From another book outside my genre of choice that I couldn't put down!)

No More Lonely Nights eBook Nicole McGehee Reviews
Great book, wanted it to never end!
This book draws you in from the very start and shows you what a strong woman can accomplish while dealing with both triumph and tragedy. I had a hard time putting this down each evening as I was taken to another place and time in such a vivid and imaginative way. If you like books that show perseverance, optimism and genuine romance this book is for you!
Couldn't stop reading. Spent every extra time I had with the book. The author did a marvelous job connecting all the parts of Dominique's life and family. Hated to have the book end.
I read Ms McGehee' s other book and found it an exciting read. Loved the characters , especially the main character. So when checking if she had another book out, I bought this knowing I would enjoy it also. Her characters are smart, fresh, but not perfect. You think you know how the storyline will end up due to all the other books you have read ,but she fools you. I couldn't put this book down or the first one I read. Ms. McGehee is one of the story tellers that make you enjoy reading books.
I love this book, the author took us to Egypt during those turbulent times in the 50's and brought us to the US with a great love story. Dominique is a great heroine, triumphant in the most trying of times as her men betrayed her.In the end love trumped again and I'm happy she trusted again to have the love she deserved and the man who has waited for a long time for her.
Travel, history, romance - what more could a girl ask for? I could have been satisfied remaining in mysterious Egypt with a young woman falling in love for the first time, while her family's very existence is threatened by the volatility of a country fighting to free itself from foreign rule. But suddenly I'm whisked away to America - to San Francisco, New York, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. - to a new town, new life, new status, new man. Ms. McGehee takes us on one woman's growth from a starry-eyed ingénue of WWII to the disillusioned housewife of the 60s and beyond. Leading us between pampered opulence and desperate poverty, through betrayal, heartache, and despair, she unveils worlds that we may not know intimately but can easily absorb. Her characters are genuine - though their situations may not mirror our own, their hearts do. This may be one woman's search to find love and acceptance; but that's a journey each of us makes. Grab a copy for yourself; you're sure to enjoy the adventure.
I must say, this book by Nicole McGehee is one of the best books I have read in years! This definitely is one I could not put down. I read it past midnight and had to force myself to go to bed. But the next day, all I could do was read it to the end. From the first to the last page, the story of Dominique was fascinating. Her experiences in Egypt, coming to America, the marriages and career, it was all so interestingly described, you would think you are in the midst of the story yourself. There are books that leave you in an afterglow for days on end. This is one of them! I can highly recommend this book.
