I'm reading this book for the 3rd time and it's still just as good as the first time I read it. I should mention that this is the 4th book in a series, and you absolutely have to read the first 3 books before this one. The main character, Meg, is such a likable character. You feel her pain as she recovers from her kidnapping, and you root for her to overcome her fears and start living again. I love stories about tragic things happening to people and seeing the recover from them, so this was right up my alley. It also had a bit of political drama in it as Meg is the president's daughter and seeing how that all plays out during her recovery was interesting. A great read for any high school student!Tags : Long Live the Queen [Ellen Emerson White] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A compelling third book in the Presidents daughter series.
As a young teenager in the mid 80's I dreamed of being Meg Powers. The Presidents Daughter and White House Autumn were/are two of my favorite books growing up. The Powers family are like old friends, who I visit ever so often. Since Meg is slightly older than I (or was when we first met) I always looked up to her, and even now see ideas and thoughts that I had growing up that originated here. I'm convinced my music tastes were expanded because of these books. I had a crush on Steven, and found Neal simply adorable. Finding out I about 2 more books about Meg & the Powers, nearly brought me back to my teens. My big disappointment is that did not know about the final 2 books in the series sooner.
I will not rehash the plot here, there is a synopsis for that purpose. Overall I was remarkably impressed with the novel. The characters have held up well over the 30 years since their introduction. Personally I was initially distracted by the author putting the family into present times, but it did not detract from the story in any way. Ms.White also held true to the real heart of each character. Meg still is conflicted about her Mother, fights with Steven, babies Neal and loves Joan Jett. I love that the did not modernize her favorite artist, just added additional ones in. The consistency of the characters written 25 or so years apart is quite impressive.
My only issues with the book are minor. Neal's character needs to be allowed to mature. He is still acting the same was as in the presidents Daughter, at this point he should be 2 years older. His behavior is still that of a cute kindergartner, without any development. The issues brought up between Meg and her Mother should be further explored. They have always been under the surface of these books, but never really given enough ink.
Very slight spoiler (not plot specific) below ---
Lastly, more research needed to be done on wheelchairs. Before leaving the hospital, it mentions Meg will have a power wheelchair so she can get around the White House. But then once at the White House anytime she is with another person, they are pushing the wheelchair. Power chairs are typically difficult to push, and need to be engaged/disengaged from manual mode. If she had a power chair, they would not have pushed her. A slight issue, but the lack of medical research bugged me.
In this third installment of Meg Powers' life as the daughter of the first female president of the United States, Meg is kidnapped by terrorists just before her high school graduation.
The book is divided into three sections. The first is Meg prior to rescue. White keeps us inside Meg's head and what's going on in Meg's head seems very realistic. The pages fly by. Meg interacts with only one of the terrorists. He tortures her mercilessly but also brings a bottle of good scotch into the room where she's being held and sits and drinks it with her.
In the second section, Meg is in the hospital. Again, White keeps us inside Meg's head, and what's going on in Meg's head seems very realistic. Again the pages fly by.
In the third section, Meg is home at the White House. We are inside Meg's head until her best friend arrives. Beth seems to fix Meg's emotional reaction to what's happened to her much too easily. By the end of the book, Meg is planning to start college at George Washington University in just a few weeks. It's hard to believe that Meg could be planning such a thing when only a week or two earlier the drive from the hospital to the White House terrified her.
Politics are woven into this story of tremendous pain and perseverance. Meg would never have been kidnapped were she not the daughter of the president. And once Meg returns, the president has to divide her time between being a mother to Meg and being the president. Meg is angry with her mother for being the president and thus putting Meg in a position to be kidnapped. Meg is also afraid given the failure of her secret service patrol to protect her. In fact, she knows that one of them betrayed her.
If I could read fast enough, I would have read this book in one sitting. The label "political thriller" certainly fits.
This is technically third in a series of, so far, four books. But it stands by itself. Although originally marketed as young adult it fits comfortably into a general adult fiction category. As does its immediate sequel. The only problem I have with Ms. White's writing is that there is not nearly enough of it. She is a writer who's work in any subject is amazing. I often open this, or other of her books, and just start reading from a random page.
