Truly a poet of the American West, Hugo captures the landscapes, the small towns, the longings, the hurt, the small intimacies, the characters so particular to this part of the world. On the one hand, all [good] poets speak to a universal, but many also capture a place/time so accurately you know exactly where you are. Hugo was new to me. I grew up in the West, but have been on the East Coast this past decade. When I read him, I am pulled back, one of those “Oh, yes, I know what he’s talking about, I know how that looks, feels.” A wonderful discoveryTags : Making Certain It Goes On: The Collected Poems of Richard Hugo [Richard Hugo, William Kittredge] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The definitive collection of a major American poet’s work. Richard Hugo was, in James Wright’s words,Richard Hugo, William Kittredge,Making Certain It Goes On: The Collected Poems of Richard Hugo,W. Making Certain It Goes On The Collected Poems of Richard Hugo Richard Hugo William Kittredge 9780393307849 Books Reviews
I love Hugo's writing, but this paperback edition is printed on such cheap paper. It's almost newsprint. Sadly, this will detract somewhat from the reading experience.
Richard Hugo's poetry contains great work from the Pacific Northwest, and in the 1960's and 1970's his work and writings influenced many poets. Time has not been kind to Hugo, for reasons I can't understand. But fashion doesn't just exist in haute couture, alas, and maybe, I hope, that in coming years Hugo's decent honest work will come to have higher regard. No, he hasn't the fireworks of Berryman (who does?), nor is he concerned with politics (as far too many poets and poems are now), but his world is one of inquiry without guile, wisdom without cynicism, and love that accepts pain as part of the gamble. Truly fine American writing. Another great that destroyed himself with drink.
It's a strange way to read a poet but this book if read from beginning to end is almost like an autobiography of sorts. The poems themselves are outstanding but the effect of reading this volume really creates a greater overall impression of a man of his time and place.
A modern classic, and yet I'd somehow missed most of his poetry treasures. So many of these poems take your breath away, but you get it back in a fresher, deeper way.
excellent reading, especially if your from the NW, but anyone can put themselves in many of these Poems and enjoy, i did
This collection contains everything a lover of Pacific NW poetry and beyond could want. The life's work of a master of the language, who explores the smallest areas of the heart with love and vigor, Richard Hugo is a poet whose work should not be forgotten and put on the back shelf. This volume demonstrates his place with the finest we have and have had. A must for every library, public or private. I will carry this with me wherever I go.
The version destroys the original line breaks, thus affecting the reading of the poem and the intent of Hugo, who no doubt crafted each of these poems quite carefully.
The work itself is stellar, but the digital version is not how it should be read, c'mon , get it right.
