The Old English Baron a Gothic Story Clara Reeve 9781426412356 Books

Yes, we all know it's a Gothic novel, but what surprised me as someone who studies the 18th century gothic novel is that this one's setting is in England! This novel also wasn't originally entitled The Old English Baron, but the Champion of Virtue! The original title was much more suiting to me as its not about the Baron as much as it is about the boy who champions every bad obstacle by virtue. Not much of a gothic (by that means a terrorist) novel. It's a buildingsroman, which, if you don't know what that is then read Clara Reeve's novel and find out! Kind of reminds me of Great Expectations except A LOT shorter. A quick read for some or a good read for gothic enthusiasts. I would also recommend it to educators since it is a short, sweet, rewarding end to the novel.

The Old English Baron a Gothic Story Clara Reeve 9781426412356 Books Reviews

Eighteenth-century authors were adept at vicious put-downs. Sir Walter Scott called The Old English Baron "tame and tedious." Horace Walpole considered it an "insipid dull thing." Nonetheless, the public liked the book, and it established Reeve's reputation.

The setting is England in the 1430s. Sir Philip Harclay returns home from thirty years of fighting abroad to find friends and relatives all passed away. He's particularly shocked at the death of his close friend young Lord Lovel.

Strangely, the new Lord Lovel sold Lovel Castle precipitously and moved far away. Ominously, the castle has a shut-up wing reputed to be haunted.

There's a striking young man living with the sons of the present owner of Lovel castle. Sir Philip feels greatly attracted to this Edmund. He bears a disturbing resemblance to the late Sir Lovel! Although supposedly the son of a peasant, Edmund seems unaccountably above his station.

The mysteries we sense here are destined to be unraveled with the help of the excellent Sir Philip, the virtuous Edmund, a devoted old servant, a courageous priest - and a discreet ghost.

Clara Reeve felt that ghosts should behave soberly and keep their manifestations reasonable. She deplored the supernatural excesses of Horace Walpole.

Walpole's annoyance with The Old English Baron was understandable. Reeve frankly admitted that her book was "the literary offspring of The Castle of Otranto" and was clearly trying to improve upon Walpole's work.

Reeve's Gothic mystery first appeared in 1777 as The Champion of Virtue and was revised in 1778 as The Old English Baron.

I found this somewhat neglected Gothic novel eminently readable. It was audacious of Reeve to infuse the Gothic novel with the style and values of late eighteenth century sentimental fiction. Her refined Gothic is fun reading.
The novel at 138 pages, is finished by around page 88, the rest of the story is minute details of who gets what, marriage details, lots of sobbing in happiness. The story centers on a dark deed, but the content is mostly people telling each other how noble and valiant or how evil and treacherous they are. Lots of sighing, sobbing, too much sobbing, over the top sobbing, but that's romanticism for you, excessive displays of emotion. Maudlin might be the right word. This is definitely no The Monk. If you want dark gothic stuff look elsewhere.
Pretty much the second of the prime gothics to be written. Unfortunately it is not a great read. Important only because it fits in between Walpole and Radcliffe. Nowhere near as good as Horace Walpole's CASTLE or the best of them all...Lewis' THE MONK. Read a lesser Radcliffe like TALE OF THE FOREST instead.
Once you start you will not be able to put it down until you finish every last page. Please enjoy.
Just took too long to get here. I live in Alaska so that is a fact of like, though, I did order this well in return. I actually finished the kindle book before this one arrived. Now I have it for notes. The conditions is honestly better than used, the binding being gently broken in. To whom ever owned this before, thank you.
I wondered how men in gothic stories behaved if they were the good guys. Only one women in the story and she did not faint or get kidnapped. Tale of the lost heir, and son, etc, coming into his own, the people who try to stop him and the ones who tried to help him. But he had a tendency to fall on his knees and cry a lot.. And the people helping him had to stop and pray about everything, then he would cry again. Gothic romance without women. Unusual.
